In the process of translating the world, many factors come together, both from the conscious and subconscious mind. As a painter I try to bring as much as I can to help this interaction, including years of practice, study of the masters, concepts of light, colour and composition. In the end though, it is the unplanned and chance effect that usually makes a painting work and so I do my best, when I paint to step back and just let it happen.
It is the act of painting, turning the visible, transitory world into an object for contemplation and reflection that excites me. My subjects vary according to the seasons and my mood. Whether a simple arrangement of apples, or the vast open skies of East Anglia, it is the act of painting and drawing that is the real subject of my art.
